As valued members of CPJP’s community, we would like to invite you to help us mark World Day Against the Death Penalty over dinner in Melbourne on Wednesday 14 October. 

Each October, the anti-death penalty movement observes World Day to champion the call for global abolition. This year’s theme puts a spotlight on telling the stories of people affected by the death penalty, reminding all of us about the humans who face and fight against this cruel and unnecessary punishment.

We are bringing together CPJP’s Melbourne-based supporters to hear directly from people at the heart of our work, who will speak about their experiences and provide updates on recent developments and milestones in the fight to end the death penalty.

Time: 6:30-9:30 pm

Venue: The Espressionist, 108 River Esplanade, Docklands

The confirmed speakers are: 

• Julian McMahon AC SC, CPJP Ambassador and barrister, who has represented people facing the death penalty

• Christie Buckingham, CPJP Ambassador and Senior Pastor, Bayside Church, who was spiritual adviser to Myuran Sukumaran

• Sara Kowal, CPJP’s Vice-Chair and Director, Eleos Justice Monash University, and 

• Adele Cadman, recently returned from CPJP’s overseas volunteering program in Louisiana, USA .

We intend for this to be the first of a series of similar events. We are also planning a commemoration on 3 February 2027 of the 60th anniversary of the execution of Ronald Ryan, the last person executed in Australia. Please save the date and we will share details soon.
