Singapore carried out the executions of Mohd Aziz bin Hussain and Saridewi binte Djamani in late July, as well as a third execution on Thursday. All were for drug offences - all in relation to small quantities of heroin - in violation of international law. Iran continues to execute at an alarming rate, with at least 423 executions in 2023. Of those, 61 occurred in July and included four women and 11 people from the Baluch minority, according to reports from Iran Human Rights. Kuwait executed five people on 27 July, following the execution of seven people in November 2022, which saw the end of over five years of no executions in the country. Also on 27 July, two people were executed in Bangladesh. According to reports by Bangladesh’s leading human rights organisation, Odhikar, over 2,100 people were in prison under death sentences in Bangladesh at the end of 2022, while over 200 further death sentences were imposed in the first half of this year. In the context of this alarming spate of executions, the United Nations Human Rights Office has reiterated its opposition to the death penalty under all circumstances.
